LEVELS GUIDE

What is VWAP, and why it matters.

VWAP, the volume-weighted average price, is the average price paid for an instrument during a session, weighted by how much traded at each price. It is one line on the chart, but it answers a useful question: is the average participant today in profit or under water?

01 / THE FORMULA

An average that counts volume.

A simple moving average treats every bar equally. VWAP does not. A price where heavy volume traded pulls the average towards it more than a price where little traded. For each bar, most platforms use the typical price, the average of the high, low and close, and weight it by that bar's volume:

Typical price = (high + low + close) / 3
VWAP = cumulative sum of (typical price x volume) / cumulative sum of volume

Both sums start from zero at the anchor point, which is normally the start of the trading session, and grow bar by bar. That is why VWAP moves a lot early in the session and becomes steadier as volume accumulates.

Illustrative example with round numbers: if the first bar has a typical price of 100 and volume of 1,000, and the second has a typical price of 102 and volume of 3,000, VWAP after two bars is (100 x 1,000 + 102 x 3,000) / 4,000 = 101.5. A simple average of the two prices would be 101. The heavier-volume bar pulled VWAP towards it.

02 / ANCHORING

Session VWAP and anchored VWAP.

The standard VWAP resets at the start of each session, so it describes today's trading only. In markets that trade nearly around the clock, such as index futures, forex and crypto, platforms need a rule for where the session starts, and different platforms use different rules. Check which one your chart uses before comparing levels with someone else's.

An anchored VWAP starts the calculation from a point the trader chooses instead, such as an earnings release, a swing low or a major news event. It shows the average price of everyone who has traded since that moment.

Some traders also plot standard deviation bands around VWAP to judge how stretched price is from the average.

03 / HOW TRADERS USE IT

Four common uses.

As a trend filter. Price holding above a rising VWAP suggests buyers have been in control for the session; below a falling VWAP, sellers. Many intraday traders only look for longs above VWAP and shorts below it.

As a pullback level. In a trending session, price often pulls back towards VWAP before continuing. Traders watch how it reacts there, sometimes with delta or the footprint to judge the reaction.

As a mean-reversion target. On a rotational day, when price stretches far from VWAP without follow-through, traders may look for it to return towards the average.

As an execution benchmark. Institutions often measure how well a large order was executed against the day's VWAP. Buying below it counts as a good fill, buying above it as a poor one. This is one reason the level tends to attract activity.

04 / A SESSION READ

Trend day or range day.

Illustrative scenario, not a trading rule. VWAP is most useful when you ask what kind of day it is.

A trend day. Price opens, pushes higher, and every pullback in the first hours stops at or just above a rising VWAP. The line slopes steadily upwards. On a day like this, price rarely spends long below VWAP, and traders who waited for it to "revert to the mean" by shorting far above it keep being wrong. The useful trades are pullbacks towards VWAP in the direction of the trend.

A range day. Price crosses VWAP again and again, the line is almost flat, and each move away from it fades. Here the trend-following reading fails, and traders instead watch the extremes of the range, fading moves that stretch far from VWAP back towards it.

The slope of the line and how often price crosses it are quick clues to which kind of day you are in. Many traders make that call before choosing a setup, rather than using the same VWAP tactic every day.

05 / LIMITS

What VWAP is not.

  • It lags. VWAP is built from past trades. Late in the session it barely moves, even on a strong move.
  • It is an intraday tool. A session VWAP on a daily chart makes little sense. On higher timeframes, anchored VWAP from a meaningful event is more useful.
  • Volume quality matters. For futures, volume comes from one exchange. For spot forex and spot metals there is no central exchange, so the volume behind VWAP is a partial measure from a data source. Treat those levels as approximate.
  • It is not a signal on its own. Price crossing VWAP in a quiet range can happen many times a day. It works best with structure, such as a volume profile level or the prior day's high and low.
06 / IN MIZORA PRO

VWAP in the terminal.

VWAP is one of the indicators on the Mizora Pro chart, available on all 13 tradable markets and all six timeframes from 1m to 1D. The key-levels panel also shows the current VWAP next to the point of control and ATR 14, so you can read the session's main reference prices without hunting for them on the chart.

Useful combinations: set a server-side price alert near VWAP so you hear about a pullback without watching the screen, or use a bracket order to enter at market on the reaction with the stop and target set in ticks. The order flow workspace can add context, with the reminder that it is in Beta and modelled from live prices, not exchange depth.

07 / FAQ

Questions, answered.

What is VWAP in trading?
VWAP is the volume-weighted average price: the average price traded during a session, weighted by the volume at each price.
How is VWAP calculated?
For each bar, multiply the typical price, (high + low + close) / 3, by volume. VWAP is the running total of those values divided by the running total of volume since the session start.
Why does VWAP reset every day?
The standard VWAP describes one session, so it resets at the session start. Anchored VWAP starts from a point you choose instead.
Is VWAP a good indicator for day trading?
Many intraday traders use it as a trend filter, a pullback level and a benchmark, but it lags and works best combined with other levels rather than as a signal on its own.
Does Mizora Pro have VWAP?
Yes. VWAP is a chart indicator in Mizora Pro, and the key-levels panel shows it with the point of control and ATR 14.
