The US oil benchmark.
CL is the futures contract on West Texas Intermediate, a light, sweet crude oil delivered at Cushing, Oklahoma. It trades on NYMEX, part of CME Group, and it is one of the two main global oil benchmarks alongside Brent.
Crude futures expire every month, faster than index futures. Mizora Pro shows CL as a continuous contract, a single series that follows the active contract, so you do not have to switch symbols at each expiry. Natural gas and Brent are not listed.
Oil has a reputation for being harder to trade than index futures, and it is partly deserved. It can grind quietly for long stretches, then reprice in seconds on a single headline. That mix rewards traders who prepare levels in advance and keep size modest, and punishes those who chase.
Supply, demand and headlines.
Oil is a physical market, so the price answers to barrels as much as to sentiment.
- Supply decisions. Output policy from OPEC and its allies (OPEC+) is one of the biggest drivers. Meeting days and surprise announcements can gap the price.
- Inventories. The US Energy Information Administration publishes its weekly petroleum status report, usually on Wednesday morning New York time, and the market reacts to the change in crude stocks. An industry estimate usually comes out the evening before.
- Demand and growth. Economic data from the US and China, and the strength of the dollar, shape the demand side.
- Geopolitics. Conflict or disruption near producing regions and shipping lanes can add a risk premium in minutes and remove it just as fast.
CL trades on CME Globex nearly 24 hours on weekdays with a short daily break. The busiest hours are usually around the New York morning. The Mizora Pro watchlist shows whether the market is open.
Plan the report. Then trade the reaction.
Oil can sit in a range for hours and then move hard on a single number. Tools in Mizora Pro that suit that rhythm:
- Alerts ahead of events. Set server-side price alerts above and below the pre-report range from the chart's right-click menu. They work with the browser closed and can email you.
- Brackets. Enter at market with stop loss and take profit set in ticks, in one action, so a fast move never catches you without a stop. Order types.
- Levels. Volume profile and the point of control show where the prior session did its business; VWAP shows whether buyers or sellers control the day. VWAP explained.
- Order flow. Footprint, delta and time and sales in the order flow workspace help read the reaction. It is in Beta and modelled from live prices, not exchange depth.
- Review. Replay report days in bar replay at up to 20x and practise the first five minutes until the decision feels routine.
Respect the range before you size.
Crude can move several times its usual range on a report or a headline, so size from the stop, not from how confident you feel. The position-size calculator in the Tools tab can size from an ATR-based stop, and the risk manager draws the price where your account would hit its daily limit before you click. Position sizing explained.
Every fill uses the server's live quote, and an order is refused if the quote is stale, which matters most in exactly the moments oil moves fastest.
